Helicopter Armouring
Armour production is implemented at all levels from I to IV level in NIJ standards. (Level IV armour provides protection against 30-06 calibers (7.62x63mm) US APM2). Additionally, level IV armour also meets all purpose effective assaults met by level III. Armour may also be manufactured at a special NIJ level for specified threats in accordance with the customer request. Second armour may be designed according to the preference of the customer.
Helicopters sometimes fly at low altitudes. For this reason they access to fire distance of the rifles and may be shot. Against this threat, a preacution can be taken by a light and affective armour. A composite balistic protection (armour) kit is developed for Skorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk helicopters. This armour we have developed provides protection against all small fire arms including lethal 30-06 caliber APM2 (7.62 x 63 mm. AP).
PANEL STRUCTURE AND FEATURES
Developed light composite panel standard provides substantial weight savings pursuant to helicopter armour. Distinct features of composite armour panel are:
Lightness
- Non striking (thinner than 17 mm)
- Reliability
- Corrosion do not emerge when exposed to water and other liquids
- Whole body is at same reliability with the floor of the helicopter
- Incombustibility up to FAR 25.853 in helicopters
- Nonskid surface (NVG compatible)
- Armour panels may be mounted on helicopters with present equipments or
- unlimited access and connection points may be provided by mounting special
- equipments.
IV level armour panels coated with high quality ceramic tiles, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide or boron carbide aramid or polyethylene and a composite layer partake at its external part. The type of the composite to be used in this system depends on balistic protection level, weight and the cost.
WEIGHT
NIJ level differs according to IV armour weight component between 7.17 lbs/ft2 (35 kg/m2) and 9.38 lbs/ft (48 kg/m).
